Pre-writing - Try it!
Pre-writing is the preliminary step to writing quality content. It helps to gather one’s thoughts, identify the message, and structure the content.
Topic selection inertia ends here!
As said, “Well begun, is half done!”, so is the selection of the topic that forms the most crucial part of a writer’s journey. The topic selected should have a definite scope, explorable, and elaborated. Start with different ideas and action verbs; write them down and connect them to create a meaningful topic. This warm-up exercise, should result in a title of approximately 14 to 15 words. Applying tricks of grammar, shortens the wordy title to make it a catchy one. Finally, the topic should convert to an open-ended question.
Your Purpose statement phobia ends here!
When we buy products online, it gets shipped to us in a package that shows what to expect inside it. Most of the time, the picture of the product on the box, shows the features of the actual product. At times, it is very different from the product inside it. This is what a purpose statement all about. It brings in the scope, clarity, and extent of coverage of the content around the topic. At times, even if the content is good, if the purpose statement is not strong enough, it doesn’t get noticed.
Sketch it out!
Next, under the umbrella topic, sketch a mind map to connect some ideas and create a bulleted list of these areas. Now, identify the extent of the current knowledge in these areas, and come up with key questions. Justify, why would the target audience want to read this topic? What would they expect?
Sources, are they reliable?
The purpose statement framed forms the guideline to design the inquiry method. The steps begin with seeking pertinent information on the topic from authentic sources. Then, validate the sources using OPVL (origin, purpose, value, and limitation) technique. Maintain a bookmark either in a document or online at www.diggo.com to organize the research resources. Annotate the points relevant for the topic and draw insights from the sources. Finally, a conclusion that consolidates the secondary research will complete this process.
Structure to shape it out!
The inquiry process helps to collate the information about the topic. The actual topic gets shaped, by proper planning to structure the content. Outline the headings in bullets and add a brief about the number of words, and what to cover under the headings. Example introduction- 100 words, would cover the following details. Other headings could be a claim, counterclaim, and conclusions. This way, create the outline of the entire structure in this step. This helps one to understand what exactly to write and the extent to which one can elaborate under each heading for the topic.
Recipe for Reader Engagement!
One may be a good writer, but still, it is a challenge to write to keep the reader engaged. Content is written, so that it is read not once, but over and over again by readers. Unless the content is of a quality standard, it is not worth a single read, and the nitigrities of pre-writing forms the baby steps to quality writing. It is like composing music, understanding the scenario, the genre, structuring the melody, and the target audience. This pre-writing approach helps the writers to develop a very methodical approach to writing.
